World food crisis looms closer.

advertisement

In our television age, the mention of a food crisis brings to mind the bloated bellies of starving children.

We think of droughts, crop failure, conflicts and the tub-thumping of Bono and Bob Geldof.

But now we have a very different sort of food crisis, one that last week for the first time brought food rationing to America when the supermarket giant Wal-Mart – owner of Asda – restricted customers to four bags of rice per visit.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

According to this article, we'll all have to tighten our belts.

The food producers possess a power that will surpass the stranglehold OPEC has over the rest.

Interesting to me are the new green cleaning products made with soybeans. I'd say we're diverting food to cleansers. Someone's bound to jump all over that.

"Food" crops should be grown for "food", not fuel or cleaning products. Remember, Backroads,

He who ", owns the "Worlds Food", owns the "Whole World."

That's why I favor smart growth planning and conservationism.

The oil sheiks may find themselves more than willing to reduce the price of their precious oil as millions clamor from hunger. Either that, or they'll develop a taste for crude.
