The role of citizen journalism in modern democracy

Today, as you will know, on average every person in the UK spends approaching half their waking hours using communication tools like PCs, laptops, mobiles, TVs, radios, iPods and other digital devices.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Found this extremely interesting as it has a bearing on most of us who use Newsvine.

This is something I think about often. It is getting very difficult to know what is important and what is trivial. Or even if there is a difference.

I am afraid of going meta with this but I think it may be one of the best things about Newsvine or other media which is self-selecting. People still get to judge for themselves but they also get the advantage of knowing what other people are thinking. It also censors itself, often by default. That is more comforting than wondering WHO is doing the censoring or even if something IS being censored.

It certainly is a moving target, though.

Thank you for your comment, Antigone, and for reading this article. I found it interesting because I am one of those people whose world revolves around Communications and I have recently started making my own Podcasts.
